Description

Ever wondered how the Masters of Oil Painting got their incredible results?  Through observation and replication let's pick a master's work, and re-engineer it to find the steps and passage techniques that gave them their great finishes.

We will start a master's painting study by blocking in with a burnt umber pick- out block-in. This will give us a way to rehearse the subject matter in shapes and also determine value depth with just one color. From this underpainting we will then apply full color to match the values underneath.

Working from Master's works should bring an appreciation for historical art time periods, and a new way to gain painting skill and knowledge from delving deeply into their pieces.

This class is taught in English.

SUPPLY LIST:

1. 8 - 10 gessoed boards. You can buy masonite or canvas board. Stretched canvas will work, but it is often loose and bouncy. I prefer a more firm surface to paint on. 12 x16 is the recommended size.

2. Pint of gesso

3. Oil painting brushes: Each type of brush is numbered differently, so get a variety of large, medium, and small brushes in both hog bristle and sable style (soft) brushes:

ADA ACCESSIBILITY & ACCOMMODATIONS:

Our classrooms are ADA accessible. Some courses may involve tasks or activities that may be difficult for individuals with limited strength, difficulty bending over, and sitting or standing for long periods of time. We are happy to work with students to find solutions to make their experience positive and doable. For example, wheel throwing takes arm strength and bending over the wheel. Students may work on hand-building projects instead of throwing. Please reach out to our office to discuss your needs.
