Description

Basic techniques and skills in oil painting will be expanded for intermediate painters. Introductory lessons will be offered as needed for first-time oil painters. The course includes working from various references and still lifes, with opportunities for students to select their own references.

This exact same class is also offered in the virtually in the evenings and in-person.

VIRTUAL students DO NOT have the option to attend in person classes.

Supply List:

1. 12x16 size Canvas Panels or gessoed boards, 10-12 total. You can buy masonite and gesso it yourself, or buy ready made canvas board. Stretched canvas will work, but it is often loose and bouncy. I prefer a more firm surface to paint on. Feel free to get a few of each to learn what you prefer.

2. Oil painting brushes:Utrecht Brush Set for Oil and Acrylic Paint (33253) and Utrecht Oil & Acrylic Synthetic Brush Set (52005)

OR, you can choose from the following:

Each type of brush is numbered differently, so get a variety of large, medium, and small brushes in both hog bristle and sable style (soft) brushes:

Hog bristle brushes: Flats: #6, #4, #2 Filberts: #6, #4, #2

Sables/Sabelette brushes: Flats: #8, #4, #1Rounds: #8 #2Filberts: #8, #4, #1

3. A double palette cup to hold solvent and painting medium gel.

4. Odorless Turpenoid OR Gamsol painting solvent (a quart) -Note: please no turpentine, the smell is too strong in our enclosed classroom.

5. 2, 4, or 8 oz bottle of Liquin OR one tube of *Solventless GEL by Gamblin.

6. Roll of blue shop towels (available at Costco, Amazon, or Home Depot)

7. 12 x 16” Blue Masterson Art Palette container ($20 at Blick in Sugarhouse or online Blick site).

8. White board palette if you don’t mind cleaning off the center each time (I keep mine in the freezer and the paint stays dry) OR Palette paper (recommended: Richeson Gray Matters, 12x16 for $14).

9. Palette knife (As seen in photo) 10. Sketchbook and pencil

11. Apron or old shirt12. Master’s brush cleaner soap in a small container. (As seen in photo) 13. Paint colors (the fun stuff!)

Cerulean BlueViridian or Pthalo Green*Sap GreenBurnt UmberAny other color you would like to bring

*Must have colors, the others are highly recommended

Note: “Artist” series are more saturated and colors have better light fastness. There are also a larger variety of colors available. “Student” or “studio” series are less expensive, less saturated, and fade faster, but perfectly fine while learning.

This is a suggested supply list. If you have comparable supplies already on hand, feel free to bring those and we can assess what you may need

for the class beyond that. You will need canvas panels - 12x16 or gessoed panels.

The brushes and colors can be a bit more varied.

INSTRUCTOR:

This class is taught by Kindra Fehr. Learn more about our instructors at https://www.visualartinstitute.org/art-faculty

DROP-INS:

This class IS open for drop-in students. All students (registered and drop-ins) must bring their own supplies. If you want to be able to drop-in to more classes, please consider getting one of our flex passes.

REFUND POLICY:

We are only able to offer refunds up to 2 weeks before the start of class. We do not offer refunds or credits or make up classes to students who miss class.

TRANSFER POLICY:

We may be able to transfer you to a different class depending on space availability.

CLASS CANCELLATION:

We find that students learn better in larger groups. If we feel the number of registrations is too low to promote a good learning environment, we may cancel the class. In the event we cancel a class, we will reach out to you as soon as possible to come to a solution.

TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM:

We try to make our classes as accessible to everyone as possible. We are able to offer a limited number of tuition assistance scholarships each term. You can complete an application on our website or call our office for assistance applying.

MULTI-CLASS DISCOUNT:

When you register for more than one class, you can receive a discount up to 10% per class!

ADA ACCESSIBILITY & ACCOMMODATIONS:

Our classrooms are ADA accessible. Some courses may involve tasks or activities that may be difficult for individuals with limited strength, difficulty bending over, and sitting or standing for long periods of time. We are happy to work with students to find solutions to make their experience positive and doable. For example, wheel throwing takes arm strength and bending over the wheel. Students may work on hand-building projects instead of throwing. Please reach out to our office to discuss your needs.
