Description

Break away from the hardness of teen life and have fun with soft and squishy clay. This class is for teens only! Complete beginners and those familiar with clay can expect to have plenty of instruction and freedom to make what they want with instructor support.

Modeled after our popular “Teens on the Wheel”  summer camp, this pottery-based class will offer teens the chance to learn the basics of throwing on a potter’s wheel and hand-building for those who prefer it. Topics may include, coiling and pinching clay, and building methods for slab work. Pottery wheel lessons will cover techniques in centering, dropping the hole, and raising the walls. Emphasis during instruction will be placed on encouraging freedom of expression and exploration.  Students can expect to finish with an assortment of fun ceramic objects to take home. Additional instruction will be woven into lessons to build knowledge in the areas of glazing and surface decoration. All teen students enrolled in current, regular session ceramics classes have
access to posted CORE TEEN open studio hours within the ceramics area. Open studio
hours change each session. However, average CORE TEEN access includes
about 10-15 hours per week. All students must become familiar with and follow our
clay studio rules and guidelines which are emailed during the first week and posted in
the ceramics studio.

MATERIALS LIST:
The materials fee is $48 and will be added on at payment. Students do not need to
purchase any other materials and all tools are provided. Any additional bags of moist
manufactured midrange clay requested throughout the session will also cost $48. This
fee covers not just clay but use of glazes, slips, firings, waxes, and more. If you have
questions about the ceramics facility and/ or classes or if you would like to donate a
bag of clay for community outreach classes, you can send an email
to: [email protected]

Clay and ceramics studios can be messy business, please wear clothing you don’t mind

Students may work on hand-building projects instead of throwing. Please reach out to our office to discuss your needs.
