Description

Learn to oil paint in this beginning oil painting class!

 

Basic techniques and skills in oil painting will be expanded for intermediate painters. Introductory lessons will be offered as needed for first-time oil painters. The course includes working from various references and still lifes, with opportunities for students to select their own references.

All skill levels welcome!

SUPPLY LIST:

*If you have comparable supplies feel free to bring those, and we can see what you else you may need from there. 


  1. 10-12 Canvas Panels or gessoed boards (8x10 or 9x12) *You can buy masonite and gesso it yourself or buy ready-made canvas boards. Stretched canvas will work but is a bit harder to paint on if you prefer a firm surface.

  2. Oil Painting Brushes:

*Each brush type is numbered differently. Get a variety of large, medium, and small brushes in both hog bristle and sable style (soft). Recommend getting at least 4 brushes to start.

Hog Bristle Brushes:

Flats: #6, #4, #2

Filberts (tongue shaped): #6, #4, #2

Sables/Sabelette Brushes:

Flats: #8, #4, #1

Rounds: #8, #2

Filberts: #8, #4, #1

  1. Double Palette Cup or 2 Individual Palette Cups (to hold solvent and painting medium gel.)

  2. Odorless Turpenoid OR Gamsol painting solvent (quart sized) *No turpentine in the classroom, the smell is too strong for the enclosed space.

  3. Silicoil Cleaning Tank

  4. Medium: 2, 4 or 8 oz bottle of Liquin OR 1 tube of Solventless Gel by Gamblin

  5. Roll of blue shop towels

  6. Blue Masterson Art Palette container 12x16 (do NOT get the red one)

  7. White Board Palette (requires more cleaning) OR Palette Paper (recommend: Richeson Gray Matters)

  8. Palette Knife

  9. Apron or Old Shirt

  10. Master’s brush cleaner soap in a small container

  11. Paint Colors 

*“Artist” series are more saturated and colors have better light fastness. “Student” or “Studio” series are less saturated and fade fast, but perfectly fine for beginners.

Must Have Colors:

Large Tube of Titanium White

Cadmium Yellow (at least 37 mm)

Yellow Ochre (at least 37 mm)

Cadmium Red Light (at least 37 mm)

Alizarin Crimson (at least 37 mm)

Ultramarine Blue (at least 37 mm)

Sap Green (at least 37 mm)

Burnt Umber (at least 37 mm)

Highly Recommended:

Cerulean Blue

Viridian or Pthalo Green

DROP-INS:

This class IS open for drop-in students. All students (registered and drop-ins) must bring their own supplies.
Can’t attend the whole term? Consider purchasing a Flex Pass.

REFUND POLICY:

We are only able to offer refunds up to 2 weeks before the start of class. We do not offer refunds or credits or make up classes to students who miss class.

TRANSFER POLICY:

We may be able to transfer you to a different class depending on space availability.

CLASS CANCELLATION:

We find that students learn better in larger groups. If we feel the number of registrations is too low to promote a good learning environment, we may cancel the class. In the event we cancel a class, we will reach out to you as soon as possible to come to a solution.

TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM:

We try to make our classes as accessible to everyone as possible. We are able to offer a limited number of tuition assistance scholarships each term. You can complete an application in English or Spanish or call our office for assistance applying.

MULTI-CLASS DISCOUNT:

When you register for more than one class, you can receive a discount up to 10% per class!

ADA ACCESSIBILITY & ACCOMMODATIONS:

Our classrooms are ADA accessible. Some courses may involve tasks or activities that may be difficult for individuals with limited strength, difficulty bending over, and sitting or standing for long periods of time. We are happy to work with students to find solutions to make their experience positive and doable. For example, wheel throwing takes arm strength and bending over the wheel. Students may work on hand-building projects instead of throwing. Please reach out to our office to discuss your needs.
