Description

A Foundational Oil Painting class perfect for beginners and Intermediates. Come learn the basics using a variety of subject matters and approaches. Demos and coaching instruction every week.

This Foundational Oil Painting class is a good fit for those just beginning, as well as the Intermediate student who wants to pick their own subject matter.  We will provide basic "starter" supplies to any first-time beginner student. Those will include paints, palette, board, and brushes. There will be instructor demonstrations and paint-a-longs for the beginners, while the intermediate students who have studied for a couple of years will be able to bring their own choice of subject matter in and be coached throughout the project. With earlier hours from 4:30-6:30pm ( ideal for teens/adults) and later hours (6:30-8:30pm) for working adults or those who prefer a night class. Subject reference will be offered and universal art concepts or oil painting will be discussed each week.

MONTHLY TOPIC BREAKDOWN:

Sept. Supply review, block ins, and value studies and organization will all be demoed and discussed

Oct. Full step oil painting using dark to light procedures. Special attention to finishing techniques will be demonstrated

Nov./Dec. Students will use learn more about color theory and use different palettes to achieve chromatic and mood results.

 

SKILLS TAUGHT IN THIS CLASS:

Students will rehearse paintings with burnt umber pick out value studies as an under painting and then match values of color on top of the underpainting. 

Brushmanship will be practiced from demonstrations using boar bristle and sable brushes to achieve different edges and mark making. 

Using a full palette, students will learn to use compliments to desaturate and neutralize colors. High and low Chroma paintings will be discussed and practiced. 

Compositional strategies will be observed and thumbnail sketches of different compostition senarios will be practiced before starting a painting. 

SUPPLY LIST:

1. 8 - 10 gessoed boards. You can buy masonite or canvas board. Stretched canvas will work, but it is often loose and bouncy. I prefer a more firm surface to paint on. 12 x16 is the recommended size.

2. Pint of gesso

3. Oil painting brushes: Each type of brush is numbered differently, so get a variety of large, medium, and small brushes in both hog bristle and sable style (soft) brushes:

Hog bristle brushes:

Flats: #6, #4, #2
Filberts: #6, #4, #2
Sables/Sabelette brushes:

Flats: #8, #4, #1
Rounds: #8 #2
Filberts: #8, #4, #1
4. A double palette cup to hold solvent and painting medium gel

5. Odorless Turpenoid or Gamsol painting solvent (a quart) -Note: please no turpentine, the smell is too strong in our enclosed classroom

6. Liquin Bottle (2, 4, or 8 oz) OR one tube of *Solventless GEL by Gamblin (preferred)

7. Roll of blue shop towels (available at Costco or Home Depot)

8. Masterson Art Palette 12 x 16” ($20 at Blick in Sugarhouse or online Blick site) AND Palette paper (recommended: Richeson Gray Matters, 12x16 for $14)

9. Palette knife

10. Sketchbook and pencil

11. Apron or old shirt

12. Master’s brush cleaner soap in a small container

13. Small bottle of clove oil to drop on paint piles to keep them wet

14. Paint colors (the fun stuff!)

DROP-INS:

This class IS open for drop-in students. Students can register online for a specific date or purchase a Flex Pass. Everyone is responsible for bringing their supplies for the class.

 

 

REFUND POLICY:

We are only able to offer refunds up to 2 weeks before the start of class. We do not offer refunds or credits or make-up classes to students who miss class.

 

TRANSFER POLICY:

We may be able to transfer you to a different class depending on space availability.

 

CLASS CANCELLATION:

We find that students learn better in larger groups. If we feel the number of registrations is too low to promote a good learning environment, we may cancel the class. In the event we cancel a class, we will reach out to you as soon as possible.

 

TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM:

We try to make our classes as accessible to everyone as possible. We are able to offer a limited number of tuition assistance scholarships each term. You can complete an application on our website or call our office for assistance applying. Applications are available in Spanish and English.

 

MULTI-CLASS DISCOUNT:

When you register for more than one class, you can receive a discount up to 10% per class! You must call and register through the front office for this discount.

 

ADA ACCESSIBILITY & ACCOMMODATIONS:

Our classrooms are ADA accessible. Some courses may involve tasks or activities that may be difficult for individuals with limited strength, difficulty bending over, and sitting or standing for long periods of time. We are happy to work with students to find solutions to make their experience positive and doable. For example, wheel throwing takes arm strength and bending over the wheel. Students may work on hand-building projects instead of throwing. Please reach out to our office to discuss your needs.
