UC: Foundational Drawing with CAST study

This Foundational drawing class will go over basic starting skills like blocking in considering placement and scale. Students will learn how to make comparative measurements with the proportions on Casts as reference. Proportions will be discussed as will finding height to width ratios. All in an attempt to accurately render what our eyes are seeing.

Casts are perfect still life models which help the students observe value and shadow edges to produce highly representational results.

We will work on smooth newsprint with Charcoal Conte 1710 B pencils to begin with, and then add in white archival sketching paper with a range of lead pencils and finally gray toned paper with white charcoal pencils.
3-4 finished portfolio worthy pieces will be the goal of achievement through the 12 week semester.

There is no class the week of Thanksgiving!!!

MONTHLY TOPIC BREAKDOWN:

Sept: Blocking in with placement and scaling to the paper size. Success in using height to width ratios will be demonstrated

Oct. Studying the shadow edge and different ways to represent hard, firm, and soft edges with different mediums and papers. Use of lifting light with kneaded erasers will be practiced.

Nov/Dec. Finishing techniques and bringing cast drawings up to a highly rendered completion. Accuracy and confident mark making will be demonstrated and practiced

SKILLS TAUGHT IN THIS CLASS: 

Observational awareness for determining height to width ratios and relational proportions on casts.

Learning to organize values and skilled finishing techniques with drawing mediums.

1 18x24 Smooth Newsprint pad
3 Conte 2710 B Charcoal pencils ( Blick)
1 kneaded eraser
1 single edge razor blade
1 sanding sponge block ( home depot)
1 pad white drawing paper 18x24
2 sheets gray toned paper 18x24
1 sketch book
1 set graphite pencils from 5B to 2H variety.

DROP-INS:

This class IS open for drop-in students. Students can register online for a specific date or purchase a Flex Pass. Everyone is responsible for bringing their supplies for the class.

REFUND POLICY:

We are only able to offer refunds up to 2 weeks before the start of class. We do not offer refunds or credits or make-up classes to students who miss class.

TRANSFER POLICY:

We may be able to transfer you to a different class depending on space availability.

CLASS CANCELLATION:

We find that students learn better in larger groups. If we feel the number of registrations is too low to promote a good learning environment, we may cancel the class. In the event we cancel a class, we will reach out to you as soon as possible.

TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM:

We try to make our classes as accessible to everyone as possible. We are able to offer a limited number of tuition assistance scholarships each term. You can complete an application on our website or call our office for assistance applying. Applications are available in Spanish and English.

MULTI-CLASS DISCOUNT:

When you register for more than one class, you can receive a discount up to 10% per class! You must call and register through the front office for this discount.

ADA ACCESSIBILITY & ACCOMMODATIONS:

Our classrooms are ADA accessible. Some courses may involve tasks or activities that may be difficult for individuals with limited strength, difficulty bending over, and sitting or standing for long periods of time. We are happy to work with students to find solutions to make their experience positive and doable. For example, wheel throwing takes arm strength and bending over the wheel. Students may work on hand-building projects instead of throwing. Please reach out to our office to discuss your needs.
