Vanessa Romo
Sculptural Methods & Surface Transformations
Saturday November 1st, 1pm - 6pm
In this workshop artist Vanessa Romo will construct a sculpture from their current series “slayers of fear.” Throughout this workshop students will observe the artists using various techniques, including press molds, slab construction, texturizing techniques using various handmade tools, and lastly application of slips & glazes to finish via. single firing. In this workshop students will learn to use various tools to render skin/fabric like surfaces on clay and explore the possibilities during leather stage via. the theme of physical transformation.
Techniques covered in workshop-
o Press molds
o Slab building/sculpting
o Texturizing -skin, pores, folds, textiles
o Experimental underglaze application + stains
o Green glazing (including firing schedule)
Student participation/plan (open to leaving this optional if there is time)-
o Artist will provide students with one leather hard slab created from mold that they will be able to experiment with during the last 30 minutes of workshop.

• General Public = $35

Vanessa Romo is an artist and educator working in Salt Lake City, Utah. As an artist, Romo seeks dialogue about human experiences through her creations. Romo was born in Mexico City, received her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Utah, and now works and teaches in Salt Lake City. Romo’s art explores the way humans process issues surrounding gender, identity, mortality, and environment. In her work, clay and the figure act as gateways into these existential topics. Romo currently teaches at the University of Utah & Westminster University. Romo’s work has been exhibited nationally, most recently at UMOCA & the UMFA.
