Have you ever wanted to learn to paint with oils? This class is for you! We’ll cover the basics of design and composition, the all-important values (dark to light), how to create the illusion of light, and how color relationships and contrasts direct viewers through your painting. Learning to “see” using these concepts will change the way you perceive the world around you. Our main goal is to free you from fear of putting paint to surface and making mistakes, and teach you the joy and satisfaction of creating.
This class is taught in English.
We will NOT have class the week of Thanksgiving.
SUPPLY LIST:
I prefer the softer, more springy long flats, in sizes varying from #0 “Riggers” to #2–#10, then ½” to 1” or wider. My philosophy is to use a bigger brush than what you’re comfortable with. I also have the usual smattering of palette knives, and an assortment of old credit cards or spackle blades to move paint around.
My palette consists of Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Indian Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue, and Cold Grey. Anything else can be mixed from these.
Linen panels (like from Michael’s or Hobby Lobby) are inexpensive and work just fine. So do MDF and Masonite with gesso. I’m not that particular in terms of student practice surfaces. For really nice, finished and framed paintings, I do prefer gallery quality linen panels, like Raymar, Centurion, New Traditions, or Strada.
Gamsol is my go-to for solvent. Turpenoid is horrible stuff!
Masterson palettes (white with a blue lid) are like Tupperware–just great at preserving oil paint, with a little clove oil on a cotton makeup pad.
VIVA paper towels are the best–sooooo absorbent! Lots better than those blue shop towels…
Blue Nitrile or Latex gloves like what paramedics use are great for protecting your hands from osmoting paint and the various toxic metals it is made from.
